WHAT IS COMPUTER GARDENING DATA DISK
Computer Gardening Data Disk is a DIF (Data Interchange Format),
or Mail Merge [delimitted by quotation marks ("), and commas (,)]
structured listing of over 400 flowers. Computer Gardening Data
Disk can be imported into your own database system (please
read your manual on importing procedures).
1. You have instant access to a disk full of cultural
information on many flowers.
2. The information can be sorted and printed any way you
specify and sent to screen or printer.(if you database
program supports these features)
3. You can add to the information your own flowers and their
special cultural needs, via the add or edit features of your
database. .
4. Information includes common name, botanical name, other
names, class, germination, sowing guide, transplant,
height, colors, light needs. soil, propagation
techniques, and other comments.
5. Importing the data into your own data base eliminates the
need to learn to use another database system, you already
know your own.
HARDWARE Requirements
1. IBM PC/XT/AT or fully compatible computer.
2. A database program that imports data formatted in DIF
(Data Interchange Format), or Mail Merge (delimitted with
" " and ,)
3. A printer (only if you wish to print information, and your
database system supports printing of reports or data).
IMPORTING OF DATA
The importing procedure for your database system is explained in
your manual in the section indexed as IMPORT/EXPORT. Most all
procedures are pretty much the same in basic steps. Usually you
will need to make an empty database for the data to be imported
into. Later in this document is a description of the format for
the empty database for you to create. Each data import file should
have its own database setup(one for bulbs, one for annuals, and
one for each additional database). Once you have setup a place
for the data to be entered into, you will start the import
program in your system. The program will probably ask from what
file and path you wish to import from, and possible to what file
to enter the information into. If you follow the import
procedures outlined in your database system you will soon have a
file of cultural information on bulbs, annuals and perennials.
The data is stored in DIF structure (Data Interchange Format).
Most database systems have no problem transfering this format of
data (check your manual to see if your database supports the DIF
structure.) If you have had your computer any time at all, you
probably already know what it will import, and how to use this
feature. If you find that the DIF import does not work then try
the Mail Merge format ("" and ,).
The field parimeter talked about earlier are listed below.
Field Name Data Type Length Sort By
1. COMMON NAME ALPHANUMERIC 25 YES
2. REFER TO ALPHANUMERIC 25 NO
3. BOTANICAL N. ALPHANUMERIC 35 YES
4. CLASS ALPHANUMERIC 10 YES

20. COMMENTS ALPHANUMERIC 65 NO
21. .... ALPHANUMERIC 65 NO
22. ..... ALPHANUMERIC 65 NO
If you lay out an empty database with these features you will
have no problem with the importing procedures. All the data has
a specific place to be entered and enough space for the data that
will be imported. If you would like to add fields of your own to
maybe add data to later, do so at the end of this format.
This layout works well in 1ST CHOICE, and Jim Buttons PC-FILE data
base systems using the custom layout. I have transferred the data
into many shareware programs and a few commercial programs and it
does well in most. An exception is the old PC-FILE 1984 version,
it only allows for 21 of the 22 field lines. Some word proccessing
programs allow you to set up a database stucture with the (") and (,)
delimiters.
The data disk has been imported into the following database systems.
Eight in One, 1st Choice, Pc-File, Paradox, 1+1=3, Freefile, Alpha
Works, PCTools, dBase systems, and Wampum. There are many others out
there that have not been tried ,mainly because I have not got the
program to try. If you have something besides what is listed ,please
drop me a card and let me know if the program accepted the field size
and layout.
COMPUGRO has data diskettes on Perennials, and Annuals that may be
ordered using the order form which can be printed via your printer.
The data disk of Perennials/Annuals/Bulbs covers more than 400 flowers
The data disk of Perennials alone covers over 200.
If you are interested in more than the Perennials/Annuals/Bulbs, by
all means fill out the survey that can be printed via your printer,
and return to us. This is the only why we have of knowing what you
would like to see in our product.
This data disk is a shareware product, and a fee of $4.00 is request-
ed by the author, to help in the cost of producing further data disk
your use. The disk may be copied and detributed freely amoung your
friends or via a bbs system. The should be no fee for the disk other
than a small fee for handling and coping. If at the time of registra-
tion you wish to send $10.00, a Perennial and Annual disk will be sent
to make over 400 flowers.
Please take a look at the order form and survey form in the disk
files.

PERTAINING TO THE IMPORTING AND EXPORTING OF DATA.

THE POSSIBILITY OF LOSING DATA. BY A SLIP OF THE FINGER ON
THE KEYS.
